General description of the collection: The organization and oommand of U.S. Forces by command of General Eisenhower papers contain a copy of a memorandum dated 6 June 1944 that defined the organization and command of United States (U.S.) Forces during the three stages of the Normandy landings during World War II. The initial stage was when the 21st Army Group, 1st Army and the 9th Air Force would establish commands in Normandy. The transitional stage followed as more U.S. Forces move onto the European continent, and the final stage was when the Advance Headquarters of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) would be established on the continent.

The Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) was established in on Feb. 13, 1944 in London, England under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Following the invasion of Europe, SHAEF was moved to Versailles, France (Aug. 1944-May 1945), and later for Frankfurt, Germany. SHAEF was dissolved on July 14, 1945.
